A naturalized Texan, Gary built his career in Houston. He began in typesetting and layout at the Pasadena Citizen (he also wrote articles and drew an editorial cartoon). He worked as an editorial artist for the Houston Post and as art director for InHouston Magazine. While consistently working as an independent commercial artist and writer, he’s held positions at printing and publishing firms, ad agencies, technical writing companies, and in public education. Gary served as curriculum designer, speechwriter, and public information officer for the Houston Independent School District (HISD). Gary created HISD’s first system-wide website (earning awards for a comprehensive, user-friendly site and for bringing it online well under the cost of private bids—saving taxpayers thousands of dollars). The Houston Chronicle hired Gary in early 2000 as web designer and graphic artist. During his tenure, he produced special features on Tropical Storm Allison, the 2000 Presidential election, Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, the events of September 11, 2001, and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Gary recently has been working with local law firms, universities, energy companies, and health-care firms. For Gary’s detailed résumé, click here.
